Yesterday, at our seminar presentation on Addictive Behaviors, the role of personal choice became a topic of interest. In the field of addictions and addictive behavior it is a fairly “hot” topic. One of the questions concerned the role of personal choice before coming into a relationship with Christ. This challenged me but I saw a clarity in Ephesians 4. Before Christ, a person is “darkened in their understanding” and have a hard heart but they still “choose” to give themselves over to sensuality in the hardness of their hearts. Before I knew Christ, when I lived in an ignorant way in the hardness of my own heart, I still knew that I had crossed the line morally. Therefore, I chose my actions. I was just more predisposed to act sinfully.
Eph 4:17-24 ESV
…you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart….They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity
I do know that after Christ, making right choices has been easier and the choices are clearer. Especially if I stick close to the Word of God.
…to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
